London: Anil Kumble has stepped down from his position as the head coach of the Indian cricket team, just two days after their humiliating loss at the hands of arch-rivals Pakistan, in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy final.

Kumble's one-year contract came to an end after the conclusion of the Champions Trophy, but he had been offered an extension till the end of India's tour of West Indies, which is set to get underway on Friday.
Interestingly, the Indian cricket team had flown to the Caribbean for the tour, but Kumble was the only one who stayed back in London for an ICC meet.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had invited applications for the Team India head coach post, with Kumble getting a direct entry into the interview, which is set to be taken by the BCCI-appointed Cricket Advisory Committee, comprising of Kumble's former India teammates - Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman..

Kumble had had a stellar performance with the Indian cricket team during his year in-charge, as he helped the side get series wins against West Indies, New Zealand, England, Bangladesh, and Australia. Under his tenure, India also enjoyed a fantastic run to the final of the ICC Champions Trophy, where they eventually ended runners-up to arch-rivals Pakistan.

Kejriwal helping to disturb Punjab peace: Rahul

Sangrur: As the poll campaign in Punjab wound down, Rahul Gandhi today accused AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal of “helping” forces who want to disturb Punjab’s peace and push it back to the dark days of militancy, remarks that came against the backdrop of Maur Mandi blast.

The ruling Badal family of SAD was also targeted by Rahul as the Congress Vice-President undertook a a whirlwind tour of the border state during which he sat on a mat and had food with locals in Sangrur village after addressing a gathering.

Punjab goes to polls on Saturday.

Rahul addressed a series of rallies in the Malwa belt, which is crucial to any party’s win, as it has the bulk of seats in the 117-member State Assembly.

Dressed in a kurta-pyjama and a sleeveless jacket, Rahul began the last day of poll campaign by addressing a gathering in Ballian village in Sangrur, where he sat on a mat and listened to the grievances of a cross-section of people including farmers, Dalits and women.

He then followed it up with by addressing rallies in Gidderbaha and Lambi and minutes before campaigning was to end at 5 p.m., Rahul also addressed a rally at Fatehgarh Sahib.

Lambi is the home constituency of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, from where State Congress chief Amarinder Singh is also in the fray.

Rahul said that if Congress is voted to power it would among others bring a tough law to deal with drug menace in Punjab and ensure that Panchayat land on which poor have right is given to them.

At all the places, Rahul talked about the “Tera” (spirit of giving) philosphy of the Sikh Gurus as against “Mera hai Mera hai” (everything is mine) philosphy of the Akalis.

Rahul also referred to the Tuesday night’s car explosion in Maur Mandi in Bathinda, which left six dead.

The blast had occurred shortly after the “jansabha” of Congress candidate Harminder Singh Jassi, who is contesting the February 4 elections from Maur Assembly seat.

“The most important thing is the atmosphere you live in.

If that atmosphere gets spoiled, violence starts or anger prevails, then the work of farmers, labourers, weaker sections suffers, entire state suffers, you know it very well,” Rahul said.

Taking a veiled dig at the ruling Akalis and the AAP, Rahul said, “from one extremist thinking, Punjab should not go to other extremist thinking. Congress is one such party which takes all sections along. We want that Punjab should rapidly progress.”

“But if violence breaks, anger prevails, then everything will be destroyed. We have to understand that those forces, which destroyed Punjab earlier (referring to militancy period in the state), because of whom violence broke, such forces are yet again raising their head.”

“Bomb blast took place and six people died (Maur). Arvind Kejriwal, who is Delhi’s Chief Minister, is helping these forces and helping them raise their head. And this is most dangerous thing for Punjab

“If these forces raise their head again, then entire agenda will be hijacked and Punjab will look in some other direction,” he warned.

Rahul said, “So, it is necessary all of us together, be from any religion, caste or creed, we all should again stand up so that we can build a Punjab, which was known for its spirit of giving, a path as shown Guru Nanak Dev and Guru Gobind Singh.”

Rahul said the Sikh Gurus talked of taking everyone along.

“We want to bring back that spirit of Punjabiyat, where everyone used to participate and share moments of joy and grief together,” Rahul, said, adding Punjab can show direction to entire India.

After US, Kuwait bans 5 Muslim majority countries including Pakistan

Kuwait City: After US President Donald Trump’s executive order banning seven Muslim-majority countries last Friday, the Kuwaiti government has now told would-be migrants from the five banned nations to not apply for visas.

The five countries include Syria, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran. However, Pakistan’s Ambassador in Kuwait Ghulam Dastagir has refuted reports of a visa ban placed on the country by Kuwait.

With this, Kuwait will be the only nation to prohibit the entry of Syrian nationals prior to Mr Trump’s executive action. Kuwait City had earlier issued a suspension of visas for all Syrians in 2011.

In July 2016, Kuwait had foiled thee terror plots planned by the ISIS. Several pre-emptive raids inside and outside Kuwait ended in the arrests of militants which the interior ministry had said belonged to “Daesh”. Daesh is the Arabic acronym for ISIS. In July 2015, the Gulf country, home to several US military bases, suffered its first ever

ISIS-claimed attack, when a blast targeting a Shia mosque killed 27 people and injured over 200. Kuwait had also issued travel advice last year stating that “Terrorists continue to issue statements threatening to carry out attacks in the Gulf region. These include references to attacks on western interests, including residential compounds, military, oil, transport and aviation interests, as well as crowded places, including hotels.

What can I add that people across professions and age groups have not already said? But adding your voice will definitely make a difference.

“And make a difference we must. Please join me in making our voice stronger so that globally, our children are not discriminated against on the basis of their religion and do not have to bear the brunt of a political witch hunt.”

Hrithik, Yami didn’t see each other in takes for ‘Kaabil’

Kolkata: Actors Yami Gautam and Hrithik Roshan on Friday expressed amazement that not seeing each other during takes while filming “Kaabil” actually enriched their performances.

“One amazing thing that we both discovered when playing blind… When you don’t have deception of the visual (to a great extent that is a lie), when you close your eyes and sense what you are feeling from the other person, it really comes through,” Hrithik told the media here.

Produced by Rakesh Roshan and directed by Sanjay Gupta, “Kaabil” is an intense drama about a visually challenged couple.

“We weren’t seeing each other during the takes. We didn’t know what we were creating. When we saw the monitor, we smiled at each other and said, ‘How sweet are they’. We were referring to ourselves as ‘they’. It was really a magical experience,” Hrithik said.

Yami, who also stars in the drama, admitted she had a “patent Miss Universe reaction” when she was offered the role opposite Hrithik.

She heaped praises on her co-star for being “extremely giving” in terms of commitment to the team and the work in hand.

“My reactions were not just restricted to my emotions. They were all over my heart, my face. I had a patent Miss Universe reaction exactly like that. For days, (I kept up that smile),” the “Vicky Donor” actress added.

Fake doctor arrested while checking patients at AIIMS

New Delhi- A 30-year-old man was arrested on Friday at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for impersonating as a doctor and and checking patients, hospital authorities confirmed.

Varanasi resident Ritaj Tripathi was caught red-handed with a stethoscope in the emergency ward of AIIMS checking the patients. He he was trying to get patients admitted in the hospital.

“Today at about 12:30 p.m a fake doctor, named Ritaj Tripathi, resident of Varanasi, was caught red-handed in the emergency ward of AIIMS. With a stethoscope around his neck, he was seen checking the patients. He was unmasked while trying to arrange admission of a patient in the emergency ward,” said a complaint copy issued by the security officer of AIIMS.

According to the hospital, Tripathi claimed to be a doctor working at AIIMS and used to bring patients for treatment.

“It seems he was running the illegal business of making money from patients,” said the statement.

AIIMS said that Tripathi, on a number of occasions earlier, had introduced himself as a doctor.

According to AIIMS, when Tripathi was asked why he had conned patients and if he had actual medical knowledge, he said that he was not a medical doctor but a yoga graduate from Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga.

Tripathi has written a letter to the hospital administration, admitting his mistake.

This is second such case of impersonation in the last two weeks. Earlier, a 37-year-old imposter was arrested at Safdarjung Hospital claiming to be an associate professor at AIIMS Trauma Centre in the orthopaedics department and had forced resident doctors to admit patients.

Gujarat Tiffin Blast acquittals after 14 Years: Anyone accountable?

New Delhi- “Do not ask what we have gone through in these 14 years, and how we were made to feel as if were the criminals,” said the wife of Habib Hava, an electrician, who has just been acquitted by the Supreme Court in the Ahmedabad Tiffin Blast case. She can barely voice her relief that her husband will soon be with her, saying, “please pray, and that we can live a normal life now.”

If it were not for the Supreme Court and the tenacity of some organisations like the Jamiat Ulema i Hind (Arshad Madani) and a host of lawyers who refuse to give up, countless innocent Muslim youth would have been doomed to the gallows by the police, the administrative system, and often the lower courts.

A pattern is emerging: a terror blast; police move in to arrest scores of Muslim youth in the city, or locality; they are tortured and interrogated; some are freed; cases are filed against the others for terrorism and related sections; they spend years in jail; in between a few are acquitted by the lower courts occasionally; others are given life imprisonment, being lucky if they do not get death; a lifetime later, the higher courts acquit them.

Their lives are destroyed, their families usually lower middle class rendered destitute, they emerge from jail un-employable. And no one is held accountable. The policemen who arrested them remain with impunity. There is no compensation for the years lost, for the torture and for the imprisonment. There is no rehabilitation. That they have been freed is suppose to be enough compensation, and most of the time they are so grateful, and so broken from within, that all they want is to remain quiet, away from the cops and the law if they are so allowed.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court released four Muslim men—in jail for 14 years for what was known as the Ahmedabad Tiffin Bomb Blast case. In 2002, on May 29 five bombs were placed inside the Municipal Corporaion buses of Ahmedabad. Two did not work, three did in which about 11 passengers in different buses sustained minor injuries. This was after the massive violence in Gujarat in which nearly 2000 were killed, if not more, by organised mobs.

Initially no action was taken. The case was transferred to the Crime Branch and about a year later 21 Muslim youth were rounded up. Four were left right at the beginning of the case. Another 12 were acquitted by a special POTA court on May 12, 2006. The trial court convicted five of them to 10 years imprisonment. The Gujarat High Court acquitted one person of all charges on January 24, 2011 and convicted the remaining four to life imprisonment, instead of the initial ten years

Nitish, Lalu term Budget 2017-18 ”disappointing”

Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his ally Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad on Wednesday said Union Budget 2017-18 is “disappointing” for people, particularly the poor, farmers and youths.

Both the Janata Dal (United) president and the RJD chief pointed out that the central government has failed to provide special packages to backward states such as Bihar as promised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the campaign for the state assembly polls in 2015.

“The budget has disappointed the people. There is nothing that could speed up growth and development in the country. It is not going to help the common people, farmers and the youths,” Kumar told the media here.

The Chief Minister said he expected special packages for Bihar but there was no such mention in the budget. “Bihar got nothing new in the budget.

Kumar questioned the Centre`s silence over how much black money returned to the banks after demonetisation and what benefit did the November 8 move bring to the Indian economy.

“Why has Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in his budget speech in parliament not given any information about how much black money returned following demonetisation and the benefits of demonetisation.”

According to the Chief Minister, it was surprising that there was no specific reference to the much-hyped move of demonetising old Rs 500 and 1,000 notes.

Lalu said it was a `nirashajanak` (disappointing) budget as there was no relief for the common people, who have been fighting for survival after demonetisation.

“Why has the central government failed to inform how much employment it provided to youths last year as Modi had promised to bring in two crore jobs each year.

“What about special focus to help farmers, who have been committing suicide,” Lalu asked.

The RJD chief said the budget was anti-poor, anti-farmer and anti-youth.

Rahul gandhi doesn’t know about our response to cross-border terror: BJP chief

Panaji: Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi doesn’t realise the difference between the response of the Indian armed forces to cross-border terrorism during the earlier UPA rule and that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he wears Italian spectacles, BJP President Amit Shah said on Wednesday.

“Now Rahul baba asks Modi ji, there is cross-border firing during your government. It used to happen in our government too. So what is the difference? You will not know Rahul baba, you are wearing Italian spectacles,” Shah told a rally in Bicholim town in north Goa.

“(The difference is) when your government was in power, the cross-border firing was started by Pakistan and ended by them. Now, there is a BJP government and Narendra Modi is its Prime Minister and Manohar Parrikar its Defence Minister. Now the firing is still started by the Pakistan Army, but it is now ended by the Indian Army,” Shah said.

“They fire a bullet and we respond with a cannon… no one has the courage to severe our soldier’s head,” the BJP President said.

Birds of same feather: Akhilesh jibe on BJP, BSP

Ghaziabad:- Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today attacked BSP and BJP saying they are the “birds of the same feather” and can “go to any extent” to form the next government in the state.

Addressing a public meeting in Masuri town for Congress-SP candidate Dharmesh Tomar from Dhaulana constituency, which falls parts in Ghaziabad and parts in Hapur, he said BJP-BSP had formed coalition government in the past but shattered the alliance “out of greed for power”.

He said the Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance will win at least 300 seats by defeating “communal forces”.

He further said Mayawati had “deliberately transferred” BSP’s vote to BJP during 2014 parliamentary elections.

He alleged that BSP is “selling” tickets in “several crores of rupees” that is why so many sitting MLAs and party workers left the party and joined SP-congress alliance.

He said people suffered badly due to demonetisation.

Taking a jibe over the issue, he said money is not black but the transactions are black.

Shah attacks Cong, says Rahul wearing Italian glasses

Panaji-  president Amit Shah today signed off his party’s campaign in poll-bound Goa by launching a broadside against Congress and its vice-president Rahul Gandhi who, he said, was “wearing Italian glasses”.

“Press hard the button in front of Lotus symbol on February 4 so that the current can be felt in Italy,” he said while addressing a public meeting in Bicholim constituency.

The BJP chief said the borders remained unsafe under the erstwhile “Sonia-Manmohan government” rule.

“There used to be firing from across the border every day.

Rahulbaba was pointing out that even now firing continues from across the border, so what is the difference between then and now?

“Rahulbaba apko fark maloom nahi padega, apki ankh par to Italian chasma chada hua hai (Rahulbaba you won’t understand the difference between then and now because you are wearing Italian spectacles),” Shah said.

Continuing his diatribe, Shah said, “When your (Congress) government was in power, Pakistan used to start the firing and end it too. But now, Pakistan starts the firing but Indian soldiers end it. No one can now dare to mutilate head of our soldiers.”

The BJP chief said, “Rahulbaba keeps asking us what Modiji (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) has done?

“Jab 2019 me ayenge to ek ek second ka aur ek ek pai ka hisab bharatiya janata ko denge (we will give account of every penny to people of India on returning to power in 2019),” Shah said.

Shah said Rahul should give account of what the UPA government had done during its 10-year tenure at the Centre instead of asking BJP.

“There were so many scams during the UPA regime that the list is unending. There was a scam in ISRO, 2G, submarine…

Congress did not spare coal which even thieves do not steal.

“After committing scams to the tune of Rs 12 lakh crore, Rahul is now questioning us? I can say with pride that in the last two-and-half years of our rule, even Opposition parties cannot accuse us of being involved in any scam,” Shah said.

He appealed to people to elect BJP candidates on “two- third of total 40 seats for a stable government.
